"Great GoreTex glory boots to fend off the minging winter"

By Ian Collins, Mountain Biking UK

Winter riding means wet and cold, and the first place you start to feel the effect of this onslaught is your feet. And once the pinkies are cold, they staycold. But Shimano’s new MW80 could be the answer to your problems.

Based around their resin performance sole is a GoreTex insulated upper with a PU-coated waterproof booty. The shoe is as waterproof as a canoe. With seam sealed construction, the added ‘splash deck’ neoprene collar stops any ingress of cold and wet from above.

The thick upper adds insulation, but that does mean you need to be careful when buying, because they come up a little small. Once sized correctly, they are very comfortable and offer a solid pedal platform and reasonable grip for walking.

Best of all, they really do keep your tootsies toastie, even in the most vile conditions, and for us, that's worth the hefty price.

Manufacturers description

• Polyurethane coated leather upper provide protection from the worst elements and is highly durable. • Tall neoprene ankle cover with water resistant splash guard fits snugly using a Velcro-style closure to help reduce mud and water ingress. • Insulated liner provides much needed added warmth in cold winter conditions. • Durable reinforced armour around the toe and heel can take the harshest of winter conditions in its stride. • Aggressive mud-shedding rubber tread pattern for added extra traction. • Cup-moulded EVA backed inner sole makes for a comfortable foot-bed. • Texon midsole and fibreglass reinforced outer sole give a lightweight and supportive platform to aid pedal power. • Three wide Velcro-style straps are easy to adjust even with gloves on, and they help provide a snug fit. • Reflective detailing on the heel help keep you more visible in low light conditions. • Weight - 930g for a pair of size 40

Warm, comfortable (especially the ankle cuff), and so far surprisingly water proof. The only time I've gotten a wet foot is when I was washing them off with the hose and forced water in under the ankle cuff. Nice stiff sole allowing easy engagement with SPDs. Work well with my Candy Cs and Crank Bros cleats. I can see why so many people rate these shoes int eh winter!

Good warm comfy Shoes to ride in, comfy off the bike too. If you want dry feet, wear binbags over them. Out of 2 rides in the wet Ive come back with my feet swimming in them.

    Not impressed with the waterproofness.

Warm, comfortable and waterproof (so far). Three month of riding in pretty much all but the foulest of weather with no complaints.

Been using these shoes for 3 (wintry) months now here in SW Scotland. Nice and warm shoes and have been a god save on wintry rides but no way will they keep your feet dry. Wet rides usually end up with 2 warm basins of water at the end of your legs. Still worth buying as winter shoes though.

Warm and comfortable, waterproof in light rain but I havent tested then in a real downpour yet. My only complaint is that because there is no spd cleat recess they are difficult to walk in. If you use the recomended spd cleat with the rubber "pontoon" they are very difficult to engage in Shimano SPD pedals. Probably better with SPD SL s. I may have to ditch the rubber thingies and hope I never have to walk in them. As usual with Shimano shoes, get a size larger than usual shoe size.

I think these shoes are about as waterproof and as warm as it is possible to get - considering the need to be breathable and the limited bulk. I have done 3+ hours at minus 5-10 celcius, and I don't think you can ask more than that. And your fingers are probably screaming by then, anyway. I have also plonked them in a few muddy puddles, and still got home with warm, dry toes. Top stuff, Shimano. But, like it says above, a size smaller than my other Shimano shoes.

I can't rate these shoes high enough.

I'm in the Isle of Man and bike through the winter. I've done quite a bit of wading through bogs and rivers this year and my feet have stayed dry throughout.

I have no problems with walking in them and they're easy as hell with spd's.

If you can get hold of them, don't hesitate, you won't regret it.

WARNING. Do not buy these Shimano shoes if you depend on dry feet!

I ride 365 days a year, and bought these for being able to use them anywhere anytime.

However after having been in typical rainy wheather for a long ride, if find the shoes completely soaked. Feet are practically bathing in water in the shoes. Waterresistant is a complete hoax claim to make for these shoes. Had I worn the shoes in cold condition and get this wet, I would not have been able to make it home without getting sick. Being out on rides for 4-8 hours in is essential to stay warm to stay healthy.

With this knowledge in mind you can probably find better solutions with a cheaper shoe and overshoe or look for other brands.

I wish some serious all weather riders would have put out a warning before I bought the shoes. Anyway here it is.
