Lake MX102 mountain bike shoes £95

Great for staying dry

BikeRadar score 3.5/5

The 2011 MX102 is a strong sign that Lake have got an eye on the cutting-edge technologies used elsewhere in the bike shoe industry. There’s a low-profile lace and lace keeper, and a Tektile waterproof membrane soft shell-style upper with an injection-moulded rubber toe protector to give the shoe a degree of kickability.

While not particularly warm, the Ripstop Tektile material did keep our toes dry in December snow and January slush. The mid-sole is glass-fibre-reinforced nylon, and is fine for tackling trail and full-on mountains.

The 102 also has the legendary Vibram rubber outsole, and you’re more likely to wear out the uppers or get bored of its looks before you see the soles showing signs of checking out. The outsole profile is low, giving reasonable grip in mud, though you’ll have to take care as the tread isn’t that aggressively shaped. Clipping in and out with the MX102 was a breeze.
