Shimano AM45 SPD mountain bike shoes £69.99

Versatile footwear

BikeRadar score 4/5

The AM45s may look like the classic MP66 (or DX as many will know them) shoes, but they’re littered with a number of subtle differences that make them a great addition to Shimano’s already impressive range. Contrary to popular belief, the AM45s have been introduced to complement the MP66s, not replace them.

With no mesh sections on the upper of the shoe and a more complete closure on the lace flap, these smooth, stealthy all-mountain shoes do a great job of keeping water well away from your feet. Like the MP66s, the AM45s are quite roomy, accommodating those with broader feet well.

Protection-wise, the thick lace flap and toughened toebox will shrug off debris quite happily. The high inside ankle does a great job of cushioning any of those nasty knocks as well as adding support and comfort.

The cutout for the cleat is roomy enough to shed mud well but due to the shoe’s width, we had to run the cleat quite far over to ensure we could achieve ample crank clearance.

The sole is plenty stiff enough for trail riding and there’s enough grip there if you do fancy using them for downhill duties. We’ve used them for a bit of everything over the past few months and they’ve stood up to all the various challenges superbly.
