BikeRadar verdict
"Little changes have made a huge difference to Shimano's second tier road groupset"
The name remains the same but in Ultegra 6700 Shimano have carried out the biggest and most dramatic overhaul of the groupset since the introduction of 10-speed in 2005.
As Shimano tradition seemingly dictates, the second tier road groupset from the Japanese component manufacturers has adopted many of the changes made to the top-end Dura-Ace group during last year's revamp.
The most immediate and obvious change to Ultegra is its appearance. Carbon brake levers, hidden cables and the bolt-free face of the hollow outer chainring are the biggest changes. Each refinement contributes to an altogether cleaner appearance.

It feels different too. The new levers provide a more comfortable 'cruising' position than their predecessors. With the mechanism pushed back into the body, the flat top section of the STI levers provides plenty of room for hands to spread out across the top of the hood – a boon for longer rides.
Despite these changes, Shimano have managed to retain a firm pistol-grip. A cutout in the front of the lever provides an anchor for the index finger when climbing.
The brakes remains as firm and reliable as ever. There is, however, a significant improvement in your ability to brake while riding with hands on top of the levers.

This is due to a change in the position of the brake lever pivot which provides increased leverage. It's a subtle mechanical change but a big advantage for the rider. It'll be particularly appreciated by those who suffered with the heavier braking action of years gone by.
The lever redesign again provides an advantage when it comes to shifting performance. The flat outer profile of the carbon lever provides extra surface area that makes shifting from the top of the levers easier. The outboard angle of the lever blades provides a similar advantage when riding in the drops.
Compared to their competitors, Shimano have maintained their slightly longer shift action. This isn't a bad thing – with the load spread through a slightly longer arc, the result is an easier shift.

Shimano have also refined shifting performance through other means. Appearance alone indicates that a lot has changed in the drivetrain. The literature backs this up: a new outer chainring, directional chain and a stiffened front derailleur have been added. On the road the changes are particularly noticeable when shifting into the outer chainring, with the new design delivering a firm action.
Shimano suggest that the new drivetrain configuration will reduce rubbing on the front derailleur when the chain is exposed to extreme chain angles. In practice, the trim settings in the lever were still required, but given the chain angle required to produce the distinctive rattle, it's not a big issue.
Aesthetic elements aside, it's the usability of the new Ultegra that is the true beneficiary of the changes since 6600. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the modifications add up to an impressive result. It's a result that looks likely to make Ultegra 6700 a winner.

Am I the only one wondering why they've done away with the 2009 Ultegra-SL "ice grey" look? I was rather fond of that! (on my Cervelo S1).

have they done away with that awful indexed front mech shifting? At least they have recognised there is(was) chainrub with existing shimano. Assumes the rider dosent know how to change or trim. Shifting for dummies is acceptable on Sora, but not on performance kit for the experienced. Also means you have to buy into Shimano for everything, ie no mix and match.

Still ugly, now in a more futuristic way than ever. Interesting that the front chainring is hollow like Dura Ace, does that mean a throw away chainset due to the replacement ring cost?

JE JAMES Cycles are selling Chorus Carbon for £779. I know where I'd spend my money, and it wouldn't be on the Ultegra ;->

actualy both groups are for same money in that store- (and in most german webstores). Shoudn't manufacturers give diferent RRP for both- LBS and online stores once those prices are always so diferent? Fro one side it is o.k. to pay money product do cost. From other- I don't like the feeling that i am giving to someone 200GPB just because he is not virtual.

I'm not understanding much of the last three posts. Is this just me?
p.s. Don't like the look of this. Prefer Campag Chorus or SRAM Force for looks and performance.
p.p.s. I use Campag and SRAM on my bikes. Oh, and they're both lighter as groupsets too.

I bought the 6700 groupset for €660 from Probikekit a month ago. I had Ultegra SL on my Tarmac Expert. I love the new look and the performance. On the looks side, Shimano have finally got around to hiding the gear cables and the carbon levers look bitchin'. The new hollowtech chainset also looks the business and both have turned heads. On the performance gear changes are easier and have a better feel. I haven't noticed any improvement in braking. With the new chainset I can now use 10th (39x12) with the chain rubbing off the outer ring of the chainset. I think this groupset is the best looking and best value of its competitors.

Never use < 39x 12> unless you want to ruin your chain, look down the chain and notice the extreme angle its at , use your big ring < 17,18,19> and you will notice it much better. Shimano have taken the cheap option on finish, its so much easier to coat a metal like the chainset and rear mech rather than polish and clear anodise, labour time much longer. Shimano allways stated they would never run the gear cables under the bar tape because of higher friction making gear changes heavier, thats exactly whats happened on both new Dura Ace and Ultegra , its unfortunate. We have managed to buy 7800 Dura Ace for next year, you will notice Sastre, Thor, and many other top pros using it because its better.

So as only one of two people on this who have the kit and used it in anger here's what I think.
I have a 6600 kitted Kiron and I thought that was good, my only minor gripe being indexed front mech shifting. So as my planet X ti arrrived I was looking forward to riding the new groupset.
The 6700 levers are much longer to hold on to when just resting your hands but also your fingers do fall into a natural position on climbing. I am short and had no discomfort at all in comparison with the 6600 shift. The action of shifting is precise and has a satisfying snick when it drops into place. Initially there was some chain rub on the front mech but that was easily dialled out with the front mech adjusters.
The front mech is a little stiff at first usage but some stripping and greasing sorted that.
The rear mech is somewhat lighter than the previous model and maintains a precise shift.
The chainsets are good looking and there is no hint of flex when you are putting the hammers down on a sprinted climb.
Having ridden just over 100 miles on it this week, I do think it is an improvement, but I do think that indexed front should have been removed.
Oh and terminator, I thought the reasons were still using 7800 parts was compatibility with SRM power monitoring equipment not because it is 'better'.

No your wrong SRM only concerns the chainset not the shifters please dont try to be clever, if you read cyclingnews.com see what they say about the groupset its not good.

This is purely a visual comment. Visually, I give the STI levers 3 stars (and that's generous). SRAM levers looks best. The exaggerated shift pads are ace. marine fins or an aircraft spoiler? both. this visually earns it top marks. I chose the 6600 ultegra for visual points and NOT the 6700. The classic dagger-like heads poised forth is viscerally striking. the new 6700 looks like a bald old bloke (nothing wrong with bald or old) but why do it when you have the choice to boldly charge forth and design something angelic and beautiful? It's a fantastic opportunity missed and lost. I was hoping and praying (swearing I'd buy the next cliff richard christmas cd if my prayers get answered) on my knees they would integrate some of the dazzling SRAM shifter design (but opportunity missed and no to sir cliff) the whole episode reminds me of car design. Aston Marin or ugly subaru impreza? (oddly, once long ago when colin macrae drove them, they looked classic and great--(if it works, dont fix, dont change)
