The lightest real mountain bike pedal, but it’s pricey and needs frequent servicing

Crank Brothers took the twin-bar concept championed by Time and simplified it, while also making it the world’s first four-sided clipless pedal.

Mud finds it almost impossible to clog in the Eggbeater – there’s just so little pedal for anything to grip to.

The 4Ti model uses a shorter than standard titanium axle (91.85mm) to reduce distance between the pedals for more neutral pedalling. It also has a titanium body and wings to keep weight down.

However, its diminutive size can make it occasionally troublesome to clip into, and the clip in/out sensation is very light, so it’s sometimes hard to know if you’ve clipped in properly.

Bearings need regular care to retain their smooth nature, although at least servicing the Eggbeater is quick and easy.
