BikeRadar verdict

4.5 out of 5 stars

"Slim and racy but extremely comfortable and supportive. Should appeal to a broad range of riders."

The Toupe is the top end race saddle from Specialized and is available in two different widths, 130 and 143mm.

Basically you get measured up for size by sitting on a gel pad, the gap imprinted by the sitbones corresponds to your saddle size. It appears to work because the Toupe is one very comfortable saddle for such a minimalist design. The carbon reinforced shell has just the right amount of give whilst being very supportive and is complimented by the springiness from the Ti rails. The back is wider than similar race styled saddles and offers a lot of comfort when you need to sit back and relax. Move forward onto the cut away nose and there's a similar level of comfort and reprieve thanks to the pressure relieving BG groove. Fast riders often struggle with the fit of the leisure saddles from Specialized but the Toupe is completely different and comes highly recommended. Available in black and white.

  • 143mm gel Toupe - Removes numbness issues, but not as comfortable as my Fizik Pave HP, especially long distance over rough terrain.

In fact, I'd say that I can always feel it the day after, if I ride with the Toupe.

I ride mostly on the hoods though.

    Still a good saddle.

  • probably the best saddle ive ever used

  • Out of 8 saddles in my time as a road racer, this is the only one that doesn't make the 'unit' go numb. Maybe a little firm on the sit-bones at first, but you adapt. I can do 120k+ rides on this with no issues. I have 4 brand new extras in the box, waiting...

  • I've tried various saddles on and off road. These are (to me) equal in comfort and weight to my Sella Italia SLR saddle which I use on my road bike. The Toupe saddles look silly light and like they'd be like riding a knife, but they have to be tried to be believed. Inspite of looks, they are really comfortable. It's just the price...

p.s. The black and red one is nice, the white one is better, but I want the Rainbow coloured one.

  • Have been suffering from numbness and loss of blood supply to that most valued part of my male anatomy due to the stock saddle on my road bike. It was either give up cycling (never!) or ignore the credit crunch and splash the cash on a new saddle.

Tried several but none gave me the relief I needed and carried too much of my weight on my perineum. Finally tried the Toupe which looks as if it would be like riding a razor blade but it is quite the opposite. I find it incredibly comfortable. I can feel my weight positively on my sit bones (but not too much as to make them sore) and hardly any weight on my perineum, so no numbness and full blood supply to the you-know-what!

Not sure about the plastic pieces on the nose and rear, but that's a minor point. The covering is also quite smooth which allows easy sliding from position to position. This took some getting used to (my other saddles are quite grippy in comparison), but I now prefer this.

Finally here's the best bit: the hull and rails have just enough flex to absorb all but the worst bumps in the road allowing me to run my tires at full pressure (120 psi). Just been out for a quick 40km blast and with the tires pumped hard, felt like I was literally flying without my backside getting kicked by every piece of road gravel!

All the above and shaved 50 grammes too! Just try one!.......

  • I was another member having problems with my "member" on the OEM saddle that came with my bike (Fizik Pave Sport). After reading glowing reviews of this saddle I popped down to my LBS to get sized up.

Each Spesh dealer should have the gel pad for measuring your sit bones. Basically you sit on it for a few minutes and your sit bones leave an indentation that can be measured with a tape. Now if you do want one of these saddles then I suggest visiting you local dealer to get measured. It's not as straight forward as to what size your pelivs is, and there are different options of which size to go for depending on what kind of riding you'll be doing. I think Spesh now do a 155 version as well for your larger riders.

I opted for the Toupe team, for no other reason than the red/black suited the colour of my bike. Vain I know, but now I've done 40 miles on the saddle I noticed an immediate difference. No more "numb nuts" and for a saddle that looks so severe, it's very comfy. I have noticed a slight discomfort in my sit bones now, but I think that's a good sign as it shows my full weight is now on them and not on my perineum. This is something I dare say I'll get used to with more miles under my belt.

As per the post above the rails do seems to dial out some of the road buzz, and due to the cut out the middle the saddle is quite springy too, so it all helps towards the comfy ride. I know this saddle is not one of the cheapest out there, but if you're looking for a comfy lightweight racing saddle then this is the one. Well done Specialized and the professor bloke that designed it!!

  • Absolutely swear by these. Got them on both the mtn and the road, and they'll be going on the fixie when it's finished. Considering the mtb is a scott ransom, it kinda shows how good they actually are!

  • I love this saddle!

Everybody's butt is unique so will their saddle prefs.

Lightweight, strong and solid. QUite comfy but don't expect sofa comfort.

Hits the the sit bones spot on and speshs gel width analysis is great.

  • I bought this saddle last year and have ridden it for 4,000 km.

For the first 10 rides, I got problem with numb or backpain or sore. Than, I kept adjusting my saddle (angle and horizontal point) until I found the right position. Once you find your position, this saddle is very comfy. I normally rides 70km with no issue.

I like the profile of this saddle, flat and racy. I found this is the best saddle I have ridden.

  • After only 3 months and maybe about 1200 miles the left hand side of the seat snapped 30 miles into a 100 mile ride. Not impressed. Although partly glad as I have an excuse to get another saddle that hopefully will be more comfortable.

Like the shape and the look of the saddle although I had the white / red version which turned pink after only a handful of rides. Didn't think too much of the S-Wrap that came with it either.
