"The toughest tyre available that won’t turn your road bike into a tank"

The Durano Plus has a belt of protective Smartguard rubber under the tread, as used in Schwalbe’s virtually impregnable Marathon Plus touring tyre. This is why the tyre is so heavy, why it’s such a pig to fit (we had to use toe-straps to grapple it on), and also why it shrugs off sharps like a solid rubber ball.

The sidewalls are pretty hard to cut too. You’d expect a tyre with this level of imperviousness to roll dismally slowly or scrabble for grip like a solid tyre. Not so. In our tests it was mid-pack. Our experiences with Marathon Pluses suggest its mileage should be excellent too.

  • "This is why the tyre is so heavy"

    So how heavy was it?

    What size were you testing?

Pretty useless review without this info!

  • if you click show full specification it tells you the weight

  • 420 grams is the actual weight of the 25's, the 23's are 366 grams. Fitting does require proper technique or two strong guys. It's great for people who don't turn back when the road turns to gravel for a bit. I've ridden the tires for over 8000 km's, with no punctures and they are still going strong.

  • Not sure where the retail price of £41.99 came from either - Schwlabe's suggested prices are £28.99 and £32.99.........even better!

  • 25s on my MASI Speciale CX. Love them!

  • I rode these (700x23) through the wintry season Nov - Mar on my commute & weekend rides around cold and wet London streets (approx: 4,000 miles) and not one single puncture. They wear very well, in fact the front tyre still has the little tread hairs on it.

They are a little heavy and hard (but you get used to them) and they are a pain to install, but there are some helpful tips & vids on fitting the Marathon plus floating around the net - which can equally be applied to the Durano plus.

They are definitely the King of Kings when it comes to puncture resistant tyres, and I have tried quite a few.

Now if they did them in some additional nice colours (like the Durano S) - I would probably use them all year round :)

  • I am not that impressed with the Durano Plus. When I bought them I was unsure whether to buy the Durano Plus or the Marathon Plus and decided to go for the Durano Plus as they were easier to get on and lighter than the Marathon's, but still meant to protect against punctures. I have done approx. 3000 km commuting into London and although initially I only had the odd puncture, I have had 4 punctures in the last 2 weeks. (I do pump them up to the correct pressure, so that is not the cause). They must just have worn out very quickly. However, Schwalbe's customer service is excellent. I called them and they told me to send them pictures of the state of the tires in case of a fault, so who knows I may just have been unlucky!

  • I fitted my first set of Durano Plus tyres and was very pleased with the results. I ride for training and fitness purposes that give generally 80-100km rides on flat and hill climbing. Road surfaces a mixture of good and not so good.

I just replaced my rear tyre only, getting just over 5000km without a puncture, reason for the change was tyre was just showing the inner casing (blue) and just hate having punctures so a new one was required, the front is still ok, not sure how many km's left but will kee

    On riding until shows signs.

Would recommend to any rider who needs to limit the punctures but dies need a good performance tyres for training or commuting!

  • Absolutely blooming love these tyres. I have them fitted to 3 bikes, which I ride around the country lanes & bye ways of Herefordshire and Gloucestershire, as well as in and around the City of Gloucester on my commute. I've had them for about 3 years I think and not a single puncture!

Only complication arose when I kept them permanently pumped to the max of 145 psi and the bit with the puncture proof strip eventually started to split from the wall of the tyre along the manufacturing join. Even then, I emailed a pic to the online shop I'd bought them from and they sent me a replacement set and returned the originals to Shwalbe.

In my view, unless you're in contents for Le Tour or perhaps London 2012, their weight / rolling resistance simply isn't an issue. Pumped up they perform brilliantly on both my commuter (Chas Roberts tourer) and on "dry bike" a.k.a. weekend Orbea race machine, fitted with He'd Ardennes wheels, which incidentally allow me to run the Duranos at a lower pressure (105 psi) due to their wider rims...

I know. I'll just get my anorak...
