BikeRadar verdict

5 out of 5 stars

"Quick and confident with a supple feel, decent longevity and loads of options"

Schwalbe’s Ultremo tyres have always been top performers but the HD version finally delivers the survivability needed to make them a winning all-rounder.

The ZX HD version adds more shoulder rubber over an ultra high density protective layer. Initial longevity signs are great with no tearing, shedding or deep cuts.

The RaceStar Triple Compound feels great, too. It’s fast on the road, a feature that’s backed up on the rollers, yet still reliable through turns in wet or dry and clean or dirty conditions.

The 23mm is buoyant for back road comfort but light enough for sprints. The coloured tyres are slightly more slippery.

  • love these tires! They do get cuts fairly easily and I have had flat (but all due to tube pinch flats). Very durable and great rolling resistance, a great tire if you want a racing tire that you can also train on.

  • By far my favourite tyre. These bad boys roll amazingly, grip in corners is just superb and with the ceramic guard in the middle you get a degree of puncture resistance aswell.

One feedback i would give, dont bother going for the ZX L (light) models as none of them i have even come across weigh in what they claim, however in general great tyre :)

  • These tyres are nice but they are very fragile.

Mine lasted only 50miles in London until I got a sidewall puncture and had to throw them away : (

    Beware!!!!!

  • Like zccax77, been out with them 3 times, had snakebite in front 2nd time out, had sidewall puncture in rear 3rd time out.

    So not happy with them.

    Would not recommend them.

  • The ease of these to get cut is worrying. After 300-400kms as well.

  • I have to say i have not been impressed with these one bit. Riding along and one split literally in half and replacement has cut badly very quickly. They do seem fragile.

  • Fast, controllable, amazing to look at, but about as strong as paper. I wore out my first ZX HD in under 100 miles (120psi and it split along the sidewall), then shredded my second shortly after (albeit on a very wet road). To be honest though, until they tore they were the most fun, best looking and fastest tyres I have ever used.

  • Okay, I'm back. These are shocking. Now that I've got my first puncture I can more fairly comment. These guys really get cut up. The surface actually has gained a miriad of fine cuts from running over .......... well.......... the road. Taking these off is traumatic. I don't want to be doing this in winter. Putting them on is almost as difficult. Sorry these will be binned very soon. Hey, they might be great on the best quality roads, but I can't spend my ride time looking for every minute flaw in the road.

  • 275 miles so far and can't really fault them hence 5*. Hassle free, no punctures (yet). Mixture of occasional 24m commute and longer Sunday rides. I was worried when I read the review about being fragile, but I've ridden these miles over average road conditions including a couple of shortish trips up a local towpath with variable gravel surface. They seem to be holding up well, and they are quick. I've even bumped up a couple of kerbs I shouldn't have without a problem. Running lightweight Schwalbe tubes as well so think I've been fairly lucky. Planning to do Way of the Roses with these in April, I was thinking of changing them for a touring tyre on the strength of negative reviews here but think I'll stick with them an see how it goes. Might report back how they cope with that outing, fingers crossed!

  • Odd to see all these bad reviews - almost makes you think they were a case of "PEBKAC".

I had a 25mm on the front for about 5000kms and only had a couple of punctures throughout that distance and then a couple more towards the end of their life. ALso had one on the rear in 23mm and that did puncture a bit more - albeit it was used on winter roads. DId about 2000-2500k with about 3 punctures.

Overall I did not have any of the above nightmarish situations and these tyres do roll very well and feel very supple, but as all lightweight tires they can suffer with punctures more that usual.

For best overall tyres in the UK at least, I think the GP4000s are the boys.
