Mavic Crossmax ST Disc Wheel Set | $809.99
BikeRadar verdict
"Stiff tracking tubeless wheel with superb looks, but stupidly expensive"
Nobody beats Mavic when it comes to killer looking wheels and these fat bodied, alloy spoked all-mountaineers are no exception.
Typically for Mavic the rims aren’t that wide, so tyres over 2.35in look pinched but they are UST tubeless-compatible as standard and super stiff.
The 24 fat alloy spokes have proved pretty tough too, with none of the unhooking problems we’ve seen on the SXs under heavy load.
The two-pawl FTS-X freehub system is slow to pick up drive though and needs regular servicing and spares to keep it sweet.
Your only mounting option is a 20mm front through-axle and quick release rear and despite all the alloy they're not that light but still mega expensive.
What we know about 09 versions suggests useful improvements are coming though.

Stiff, light and quiet. Look good as well. They freewheel really nicely. They make fitting tyres hard though.

Happy with my set so far. Been using it for almost a year in mostly xc conditions with some small drops and its holding up really well. No complaints on the engagement as my previous wheels were Crosstrails and Deores. Wish it could be convertible to the new 15mm standard.

What a poorly researched article:
1. You can get quick release front ST's and a conversion kit is available for the new 15mm standard.
2. They are incredibly lightweight for an all mountain wheelset at 1570g only 45g more than the racy XTR's.
3. There are no planned improvements for 2009 according to the August MBR.
I have two pairs and I think they are fantastic wheels. The first set has put up with a year and a half of what the Lakes could throw at it and has only recently been trued which took 5 minutes at my lbs. Oh and you can get them for £388 from Merlin Cycles.
Would agree the freehubs are relatively slow to pick up though and 2.35 tyres are the maximum I would go to.

Mine have taken a beating too. The words in this review are a cut and paste from the MBUK (Issue 229) magazine article where they got it mixed up with the 2008 Crossmax SX. The comment of "they're not that light but still mega expensive" was for the SX weight of 1966g. The STs are much lighter.
