SixSixOne Evo D30 Pads Review - BikeRadar

There’s a new buzz word in body armour – well, a buzz letter and buzz number – and that’s D30. D30 is a material made up of what they call intelligent molecules. Basically they remain flexible and malleable in normal use, but lock together on impact, absorbing the energy of the impact and protecting you from it.

661 have employed D30 technology in these latest Evo knee pads. They are similar to the Kyle Strait knee pads, but have a lower profile. There are D30 inserts on the knee cap and at the sides above and below the knee, with velcro straps keeping it in place top and bottom. 

They are very comfortable – so much so that we have even used them for cross-country riding. They get a bit warm and sweaty, but sweaty knees aren’t as uncomfortable as damaged ones. Impact absorption is down on the Kyle Strait, because It doesn’t have the hard plastic insert. The D30 does lock together, but you still feel a bit of intrusion.

We wouldn’t recommend these for downhill or where there are rocks about, but they’re superb for cross-country and all-mountain use.
