Troy Lee's A2 helmet offers more tech at a lower price

New half-shell builds on the legacy of the A1

Troy Lee has unveiled a new half-shell helmet that builds on the success of the A1 with the addition of dual-density foam, the MIPS protection system and improved ventilation.

The A2 helmet is constructed from a combination of expanded polystyrene and expanded polypropylene — better known as EPS and EPP, respectively. The idea is that these two materials will work together to absorb high- and low-velocity impacts.

This new half-shell uses 16% more EPS foam on the brow of the helmet than its predecessor to improve protection around the frontal lobe.

Last on the list of safety improvements is the addition of the MIPS system to mitigate rotational forces during a wreck.

In addition to safety features, Troy Lee has expanded the size of the vents to improve airflow — a welcome change, as the A1 could get steamy during warm days. The company claims a 25% increase in vent surface area over the A1. 

The A2 comes in 13 different color schemes and is available now for $169. This makes the A2 approximately 27% less expensive than the original MIPS-equipped A1. With the introduction of the A2, the A1 drops in price to $139 and will only be offered in a MIPS version. (UK and AU pricing have yet to be announced.)
