Afan's Penhydd mountain bike trail to close

By BikeRadar | Tuesday, Mar 23, 2010 3.01pm

The Penhydd mountain bike trail at Afan Forest Park will close on 12 April so Forestry Commission Wales can carry out tree thinning work.

Once forestry operations are completed, which is expected to take about a year, a redesigned trail will be built, which will use some of the original route.

Mountain bike ranger Carl Denham said: "Although this trail will be closed for a year or so, it gives us a great opportunity to refresh the route, which was created 10 years ago by local mountain bike club Singletrack Mind.

"It’s hoped that the work in the forest will help to open up new areas that can be used for the rebuilt Penhydd Trail and even the planned blue-graded trail."

  • Nooooooooo!!! I love that trail.

It's bad enough that it's to be closed "for a year". But, it's the "or so" that worries me most!!

Oh well, it's for the greater good.

  • Wait til they start building turbines on the Skyline.. this will seem like chickenfeed!

  • Posted this a week ago!!

  • forestration ruined llantrisant i hope the same doesnt happen to the penhydd its an iconic trail where so many people have got hooked on mountainbiking i hope it isnt changed to much

  • The plan of the forestry commision is to crop all of Afan , Margam and Bwlch (Glyncorrwg) so all three centres are going to get slammed. I live in Maesteg which sits close to all 3 . My problem is that they are being cropped to be fed into awood burning power station in Port talbot while we still import timber from scandanavia , absolutely bonkers

  • I know the closure is a health and safety thing but cant they clear fell the route first with say 50 meters either side and then fell the rest? I understand this would not be the most efficient way to do it and would requre the large machinery not driving over the trails but is it not best to keep the track intact as possible rather than destroy parts of it by traveling over it?

Have seen the mess clear felling can make of a trail in the Forest Of Dean and it is not good.

Hopefully the climb can be improved from the fireroad it is currently though!

  • So long Hidden Valley :-(

  • loved hidden valley :(

  • Penhydd is the first trail i ever rode, and it is still my fave, or at least up there with the top, i will sorely miss it! im gonna go up for a one last "farewell" ride..

You've got to be shitting me?!?!

In this day and age in a first world country can anyone explain why the UK govt is using a wood fired power station??? I thought coal fired was bad enough!!

  • penhydd the 1st mountain bike trail that i rode it got me really hooked my dad hooked and even my mum hooked its a shame that its been closed for a year

  • My mate and I headed over there today (Sunday 11th April). Great weather and an awesome trail.

OK... it is nothing special in the technical stakes BUT it has brilliant flow that just makes want to go faster and faster! To me, that adds up one thing - fun - and that is what trail riding is all about. I hope that this sense of purpose is maintained by any redevelopment.

Anyways... just have to make do with The Wall and White's Level for a bit, eh? =]

  • Terrible news this is as its my local "first proper trail" and also my fav!!! If i was to lose all three trails my life wouldnt be worth living!
