Exclusive: Limited edition Boardman bikes

By BikeRadar

Boardman Bikes are to release a limited edition run of their popular mountain, road and hybrid bikes which will feature one-off colours and decals, and use high-end componentry. They will be available in December.

There will be 500 road, 500 mountain and 250 hybrid bikes, all costing £999 each and available via the Halfords website or through Halfords stores which sell the Boardman range.

Mountain bikes will get a white RockShox Reba Race fork with custom decals, white Avid Elixir R carbon brakes with green anodised fittings and a limited edition SRAM X0 rear mech with green anodised fittings.

The full-carbon road bikes get limited edition white frame and forks, yellow brake lever hoods and white saddle, bar tape and tyres to finish the look. Hybrids get a carbon fork, SRAM S950 BB30 carbon chainset, Ritchey WCS rims and Avid 7 V-brakes.

Andy Smallwood, Halfords' product manager for premium bikes, said:  "Boardman is an award-winning bike brand, most recently achieving a Best Buy in What Mountain Bike for the Boardman Pro as well as many other accolades from the cycling press."

From our own reviews (see related links on the right) it's clear that these limited edition Boardmans should offer good value for money too.

We’ll bring you more detailed pictures of the new bikes when they’re available, but in the meantime let us know what you think of the limited edition models in the comments section below.

  • It was difficult for Halfords to source any stock, when it was a full build. With a limited edition - can imagine this could be a very vexing transaction!? Any chance of changing the background colour on the photo's for a bit of contrast? White bar tape...why? lol.

  • Regarding the road bike, what is the standard model equivalent? Are the special editions the same in every way apart from pain colour etc or are there some equipment upgrades?

  • Nice looking bikes - better than the standard black/ yellow combos.

  • Well the MTB looks good and very good spec for the money !

Shame Halford's put em together i'm sure they would sell better and maybe have a better rep if they were retailed elsewhere?

I may pop in and see if the small will sie up right for the wife she can then leave my bikes alone :/

  • Makes me a bit gutted having bought my Team Carbon only last week :P but there we go, always happens!

  • No disks for the hybrid?

  • Dont think I would want disks on a hybrid anyways.

Can't decide if I like the road bike or not. Looks like an egg.

  • No disks on the hybrid is no bad thing from my experience of a Boardman hybrid.

  • Is there really any significant difference with the limited edition MTB Pro other than the pretty colours?? You would think the original was limited edition the difficulty I had getting one out of Halfords!!....... :o)

  • damn, no special edition fs

  • AAAAARRRGGGHHHH!!! Press fit bearings on a Boardman?!?!?! It was hard enough for them to put tubes in right and get integrated headsets the right depth let alone something as high tolerance as this!!!!

I'll stick to bikes with a lifetime warranty on the frame if press fit bearings are on the component list!

  • I was chatting to a high up guy in Hlafords about the special edition Team Carbon about 3 weeks ago as I was tempted to buy one and get my deposit in early before it hit the press, but I was waiting for the pictures. Now ive seen them im not so sure. I think I will stick with the black I think.....

They are taking deposits now for the bike. Spec wise its the same as the 09 / 10 black bike, just a different colour thats all.

  • these look trick, v good value also, good first bike/winter bike/ commuter

  • Have they employed the same people from cervelo who paint the frames?

When I look at the bikes, I start thinking about the 2010 cervelo S2 I saw at the cycleshow at the weekend. I was not impressed at all. The colour scheme/design looked awful. How to ruin the desirability of a bike/brand, then look at the 2010 cervelo bikes. I can't help thinking hhhmmm, need to have a look at the real bike instead of a picture. I can't help thinking it'll be the same here.

I guess close your eyes, mount the bike, open your eyes and then ride. That way you wont see what's below you.

  • The road bike is the Team Carbon edition, the £999 price tag is the giveaway. Any chance of some higher res pics? I think it looks the biz.

  • wow. im really liking the white colour scheme..... mind you, what bike doesnt look good in white? shows up dirt though.... and the yellow? a little nod to the maillot jaune there perhaps?

  • oh, but lets get those white ritchey seatposts and stems on the road bike please guys.... i'd be happy to pay the extra

  • Shame the MTB and hybrid get kit upgrades, but the road bike just gets a new colourway. You'd think Boardman might be more focussed on the roadie...

Anyhoo, I too had hellish problems sourcing a Team Carbon this year, but in the end the Halfords mech did a good setup job, and a good (free) three-month checkup too, to iron out some glitches. The supply chain and administration is pitiful, but (in my case at least) the wrenching was fine.

Just my tuppence worth - it's not *all* bad news at Halfords.

  • According to the WMB review, the standard mountain bike comes with a RockShox Reba Race fork, Avid Elixir R brakes and SRAM X0 rear mech, so the only differences are cosmetic. Still, I think it looks pretty cool.

  • I'm surprised Halfords aren't adopting the ribble/planet x model of choosing the frame and speccing everything else with their buying power and distribution network they should be able to smash the on-line retailers in costs.

    Just an idea.

  • To quote Wesley Snipes:

    Always bet on black!

  • I like the colour schemes. Yellow/black tires would look good on the roadie.

  • Love the colour scheme of the Team Carbon. I reckon I would prefer black lever hoods but otherwise it gives the model a real fresh look. I love the graphics and the flashes of yellow on the Boardman's and I really think they look very good without expensive paint jobs and carbon finishes (keeps cost down I know). Makes me want one!!

  • Roady looks a bit Brawn Gp to me...

  • always happens when i buy somewthing. looks very trick but wouldnt want to keep the bars and seat clean. ritchey white stem and post would finish it off.

  • A cyclocross bike for £999.99 has also been released on the Halfords web site.

  • I put my deposit on a LE team carbon last week.

FYI, if you have any insurance with More Than, then you can get 10% off of halfords vouchers with no restrictions (ends 31/12). Check out the 'More4You' link on their website. I ordered my vouchers today - my car insurance has nearly paid for itself this year.....£900 for this bike is an absolute bargain.

FWIW the bike crew in the Basingstoke branch also seem v.competent (though time will tell....)
