Leatherman Tread - first look

Wearable multi-tool in the form of a bracelet

Tool geeks rejoice! Leatherman has just released details of its latest creation — a wrist-top multi-tool. The Tread incorporates 25 tools into 11 links constructed from corrosion-resistant, injection-molded stainless steel. Each link includes two or three tools.

The tread is not cycling-specific, but it does incorporate a number of useful tools, such as metric hex wrenches: the tread is not cycling-specific, but it does incorporate a number of useful tools, such as metric hex wrenches

While not cycling-specific, this wearable multi-tool incorporates a number of tools useful to cyclists, such as metric hex wrenches and flat and Philips screwdrivers. Perhaps best of all, the clasp doubles as a bottle opener.

The tread is made up of customizable links. each link has two to three tools: the tread is made up of customizable links. each link has two to three tools

The Tread is also customizable. So users could, for example, swap links for different metric hex wrenches. It is also possible that we could see discipline-specific links down the road that could include tools such as a T25 torx, or maybe even a chain tool, made by Leatherman or possibly by third parties.

Pricing for the Tread is expected to start at US$150 for the polished stainless version. A black version of the Tread with a DLC (diamond-like-carbon) coating will also be available for US$200. Leatherman expects to begin shipping the Tread this summer.

A version of the Tread bracelet that includes a watch will be available this fall. The Tread QM1 (bracelet plus watch) in polished stainless steel will retail for US$500. The black DLC version will set buyers back US$600.

Leatherman marketing and communication specialist Kitri Maguire noted that the company is exploring other wrist-top combinations as well. "We certainly hope in the future to work with other companies who excel in their area to create functional alternatives for the Tread – GPS is one area we’d like to explore," Maguire said.
