Rapha unveil their £3,000 cycling suit

By BikeRadar

When we revealed on 31 March that Rapha were making a £3,000 cycling suit, some people assumed it was an early April fool. Well it wasn't, and here's the proof.

Rapha unveiled the bespoke three-piece suit in London last night, in front of a select group of the high-end clothing company's "best British and European customers.

The garment is the result of a year's work with Savile Row tailor Timothy Everest, and is designed to be at home "on the bike and in the boardroom".

Bike-friendly features include the front flaps of the jacket, which turn back and button under the pocket so they don’t flap when riding and, along with the underside of the collar and sleeves, are pink for visibility.

For additional reach on the bike the jacket has a stretchy ‘action back’ and the cuffs turn down, making the sleeves longer.

The fabric is a wool with a Prince of Wales check. Rapha say nanotechnology in the fabric makes it amazingly water and stain resistant, and keeps the wearer cool in summer and warm in winter.

Timothy Everest said: ''The brief was to tackle the response to growth in commuting by bicycle and compromises in available clothing. The first suit is a purely bespoke design with the ergonomics needed for cycling as well as looking reasonably smart.

"The fabric is inspired by old-boy country suits worn by farmers to market – think Reid and Taylor 1958. Having said that, this colouring is more urban, being black-based with grey and a Rapha pink overcheck, so that it fits with most people’s wardrobes.

"The yarn has a nanotechnology, making it very showerproof, but unlike Teflon it doesn't affect the appearance or how the cloth handles.”

  • beyond parody!

  • Rapha need to get a life - their gear is not that great ....I bought their winter hat and it was pants for the cash and faulty - so back it went and their base layer top was no great shakes either.

Really guys come on your selling an imaginary lifestyle!

  • Now that is truly spectacular!

  • @mountain-nic If your hat was pants maybe you were wearing it in the wrong place?

  • @djahn400 - it's the polite way of saying it was $hite - very common in Wales boyo

  • oohhh suits you sir

  • As if £3k for a suit isn't bad enough some muppet decided it can be worn on a bike!! Who oh why...

  • For the person who has everything ... except a life!

  • It looks shit

  • Rapha have shot themselves in the foot with this one. We all like good gear and in a freemarket economy can buy what we like. But the 'price' has to have some relation to the 'worth'. Their £36 cap is no better than the £14 assos, which you also get the brand image.

Products must be attainable, driven by demand.

Rapha seek small volume@ high price.on the model large price means a desirable product .£3G suit is too far and smeers all the brand.

They are heading the way of mike ball's rock racing kit: when you see it, the mental tag is W@$kEr . Back to campaign drawing board

  • I don't understand who is going to buy this ? Rapha stuff is generally ok but wildly overpriced . I prefer proper cycling gear like Assos .

  • Eeeee, don't 'no what t'welrd is comin' too!

When I were a lad a good old British saddle bag t'were t'way ter carry yer suit t'werk.

Eeee them Carradice long flaps! Oh, those Karrimors,,,, er them Tikas. Put yer socks in one shoe, y-fronts int't'other, lay transversely int' saddle bag put yir slacks in next and shirt in last (triple folded, upside down with the collar rearward int' saddlebag).

Them Germans with their fancy ortliebs! Paa good old Brit know how!

Oh, get changed int' car park

  • So hands up how who knows how much a fully bespoke Savile Row suit cost? Oswald Boateng prices at around 4,500 GBP. Everest is one of the biggest names in Savile Row, certainly of the younger generation. 3K for one of his bespoke suits is not a big ask by any stretch of the imagination.

In a sport where people are willing and able to pay over the odds for the right label, it's no different to say buying a custom frame.

  • £3k is about what a bespoke suit costs, I can't see too many people wanting to ride their bike in it though somehow.

I'm not even convinced that the suit really looks that good to be honest...

  • One for the merchant bankers, clearly
