Giro Synthe MIPS helmet launched

Helmet seen at the Tour will sell for US$270 / €300 / £225

After popping up unannounced at the Tour de France, the Giro Synthe MIPS launched today and will sell for US$270 / €300 / £225 / AU$TBC.

MIPS stands for Multi-Directional Impact Protection System. In cycling helmets, it consists of a thin plastic sheath that moves somewhat inside the helmet shell on an elastomeric attachment system in the event of a crash. Proponents say this design can lessen brain injury in a crash.

For aerodynamics, Giro designed the shape of the Synthe after taking 72 different yaw angles into a count at a standard head angle of 30 percent and a speed of 25mph.

A medium Synthe MIPS weighs a claimed 260g.

The Giro Synthe MIPS will be available in four colours in August. Australian pricing and availability is to be confirmed, but we're told the model will be made available to Australian standards.
