Just in: Castelli winter clothing

By James Costley-White

UK Castelli distributors Saddleback dropped by our Bath office with some of the latest 2010 kit for testing – the Mannaggia! jacket and Diluvio gloves and overshoes.

While the stealth black colour scheme is far from ideal for winter riding, it looks like some cosy, well thought out gear.

Mannaggia! jacket

Style-wise, the Mannaggia! has clearly been influenced by MotoGP jackets, but a cycling-specific cut and breathable materials mean it should be great for pushbike racing and riding too.

The Gore Windstopper shell is windproof and water resistant, with stretch inserts on the back, side panels and elbows, and a flip-up thermal collar.

The jacket is rated for temperatures from 10°-0°C, and there are ventilation zips on the front in case you need to cool down. Reflective patches and the shiny silver 'T' logo on the back should help you be seen. It's also available in a red/white/black colour scheme, and in sizes from Small to 3XL. RRP is £250.

Diluvio gloves

These neoprene gloves looks more like surf than cycle wear, but they're surprisingly comfortable and Castelli claim they're windproof, waterproof and insulating. They're available in black or white and in two sizes – S/M and L/XL. RRP is £40.

Diluvio overshoes

The shoe covers are also made of neoprene, 3mm thick in this case, with thermosealed seams and reflective detailing on the back. They're available in black or white and in three sizes – S/M, L/XL and 2XL. RRP is £35.

  • Re Moto GP styling.

For £250 it should be leather for what is just a polyester jacket - what a ridiclous price.

I use the Cannondale Le Carbon Jacket - at only £129 it's almost half the price and a really great jacket. For winter riding I can't recommend it enough. Sadly it's only good below 10C otherwise I would be wearing it all the time. Mine has more white flashes and is better suited for British dark winters.

  • I've always been impressed with Castelli but I wont be buying any of this stuff - colour, style - looks all wrong to me. The jacket looks like a bin bag and the gloves appear to have no padding or snot wipe (sorry, sweat) wipe. Even the overshoes - twice the price of Endura for similar neoprene.

  • Horrible innit? Never expected Castelli to knock this sort of stuff out.

  • Bought the overshoes, the logos were stuck together and started to peel off taking them out of the bag!!! returned! very surprised at that.

  • Do they also do this stuff in black?

If you inverted the colours on this, so it was mainly white, i'd buy it. I've felt the fabrics and it's very high quality stuff.

You need visability in the dark winter months, not stealth-ninja-wear...

  • Ha! Mannaggia means Damn in Italiano!

  • The guy wearing the jacket has been given one far too large for him - needs to go down a size. Wiggle will show you the red/white/black version which is much more visible. Fusione Jersey is the one to wear under the Mannaggia too.

  • It’s a shame the image is such a poor one, I have brought one and you need to get the size right by trying some on. Not for everyone I know, but the jacket is super slick, perfect for a true road cyclist who appreciates the quality of a good product. Also available in Red/white/black!

I have also brought some of the gloves and overshoes, for someone who suffers from cold fingers from weather or bad circulation, they are amazing. Neoprene is an interesting fabric, it blocks wind, doesn’t let water in, 3mm thick if enough padding for anyone, they look cool on also!

Sorry for the review, but a seriously happy customer!

  • I agree, the jacket is way too big for this guy.I bought one about two weeks ago. Its amazing light, warm with great breathability and a wide range of temperature regulation. The four-way stretch elbow and side panel inserts makes the tight-fitting and aerodynamic jacket feels comfortable even off the bike. Last thing, the sleeves are finally cutted long, so they cover the top of the gloves and won't leave in any cold air in.

I got the jacket together the new Castelli longsleeve baserlayer with nano-technology. Nice piece which works very well with my new jacket.

  • I'll stick with my Fugu jacket and Winter LL tights thanks!

  • Clothing for Audi/BMW driving 'middle-management' roadies!
