Sir Chris Hoy has been chosen as the Team GB flag bearer at this Friday’s opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games.
The track cyclist was chosen following a poll by all 542 member of the squad and comes four years after he carried the flag at the closing ceremony of the Beijing Games. He will become the first cyclist to receive the honour.
It will come as a huge boost to the Scot as he prepares to add to his tally of four Olympic gold medals. Last week, Jason Kenny was picked ahead of him for the individual sprint, though he still has the team sprint and keirin to focus on.
Hoy said he was delighted to be chosen for the honour. “To lead out your team at a home Olympics is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity and one that I can’t wait to experience in just a few days’ time”.
President of British Cycling Brian Cookson added: “To have Chris carry the flag on behalf of Great Britain is another milestone in the success of cycling in Britain.”
