Tubeless tyres have transformed modern cycling. Road, gravel and MTB riders now routinely benefit from lower pressures, improved grip and reduced puncture risk. Sealants have improved, tyres have improved and wheel systems have evolved rapidly over the last decade.
Yet one small component continues to create a surprising amount of workshop frustration: the valve.
For many riders, tubeless ownership still means periodically dealing with clogged valve cores, restricted airflow and messy sealant build-up. The problem is particularly noticeable on road and gravel bikes, where narrow Presta valves remain the dominant standard despite tubeless systems placing very different demands on the valve itself.

While newer valve designs such as Fillmore and Schwalbe's Clik Valve have attempted to address some of these issues, most tubeless setups still rely on conventional Presta valves. absoluteBLACK has worked on a solution in the form of the new Aether valve.
The goal? To simplify the humble valve by removing the parts most likely to create tubeless-related headaches.
A simple solution to a complex problem

As a result, the brand has eliminated the traditional Presta valve’s removable core.
Instead of forcing air through the narrow internal passages of a conventional Presta core, the Aether valve uses a bottom-sealing plunger mechanism positioned inside the rim cavity itself. Incoming air pressure temporarily lifts the plunger during inflation before tyre pressure immediately reseals the system once pumping stops.
The concept itself isn’t entirely new. Bottom-sealing valves started appearing as far back as the early 1900s and, more recently, in products from brands including Fillmore and Peaty's. However, absoluteBLACK says its focus was on simplifying the internal complexity.

The Aether consists of only two main components: the valve tube and a lightweight rod/plunger assembly. That means there are no removable valve cores, spring-loaded mechanisms or other complex internal retention systems hidden inside the valve body.
According to the brand, the simplified internal structure with bottom-sealing mechanism markedly reduces the areas where dried sealant can accumulate over time. Removing the traditional Presta core creates a more direct airflow path during inflation, while eliminating one of the narrowest and most clog-prone sections of a conventional tubeless valve.
The result, according to absoluteBLACK, is reduced maintenance, more consistent inflation and simpler day-to-day tubeless ownership.
Carbon construction

The simplified approach also extends to the material choice, with the Aether made from a long carbon-fibre composite and weighing 2.6g per valve.
According to absoluteBLACK, the Aether’s material exceeds the tensile and yield strength of the 6061-T6 aluminium commonly used in many tubeless valves. The absence of internal threading for a removable valve core also allows thicker wall sections than would normally be possible in a similarly lightweight aluminium design.
While the Aether is fully compatible with MTB setups, the company says the valve was primarily developed around road and gravel wheel systems. With that in mind, absoluteBLACK says the Aether has another niche but increasingly discussed benefit for lightweight wheel systems: wheel balance.
While wheel imbalance may not be something every rider notices, some cyclists – particularly those riding ultra-light road wheelsets at high speeds – already use adhesive balancing weights or lead tape to reduce vibration caused by uneven mass distribution around the rim.
Because of the Aether’s low weight, absoluteBLACK says riders who choose to balance their wheels can add balancing weight opposite the valve and still end up close to the total weight of a conventional aluminium Presta valve setup.
In practice, that means wheel balancing can be achieved with little or no overall weight penalty compared to traditional valves.
Three common questions about the absoluteBLACK Aether

Can I still add tubeless sealant through the valve?
Yes. Unlike some coreless valve systems, absoluteBLACK says the Aether was designed to allow sealant to be injected directly through the valve. The simplest method is to use the flexible tube supplied with many sealant bottles or a sealant syringe with a clear hose. Because the valve has an unrestricted airflow path without a removable Presta core, there is no core to remove before adding sealant.
Will the Aether work with my existing pump?
absoluteBLACK says the Aether is fully compatible with standard Presta pump heads, floor pumps and most mini pumps. It also works with electric mini pumps and inflators. For thread-on electric pumps, absoluteBLACK recommends using the flexible hose supplied with the pump.
If the valve can't be disassembled, what happens if it needs servicing?
According to absoluteBLACK, eliminating the need for routine servicing was one of the primary design objectives. During development, the company concluded that the complexity required to make some valves serviceable can itself create the need for servicing. The Aether’s simplified two-part internal structure is designed to reduce the need for periodic disassembly in the first place.
