While a rigorous cleaning regime and using the right lube can greatly prolong chain life, replacing it before it wears out is the best way to avoid prematurely killing expensive components such as cassettes and chainrings.
However, doing so can feel painfully expensive at times, with the RRP of a Shimano 11-speed bicycle chain sitting at around £35.
Luckily, as with most Shimano products, real-world pricing rarely reflects the RRP, so you can extend your drivetrain’s life for less.

If you’re still rocking 11-speed, there are some excellent deals available right now.
As far as we can tell, Merlin has the best price for an 11-speed Shimano chain today at £10.99 (plus £3.95 postage) for the XT/Ultegra-level HG-701 chain. This chain doesn’t include a quick link, so factor that in.
If you don’t have a spare quick link, Sport and Leisure has the best price for a humble HG-601 chain at £14.99 with free postage.
If you need a chain fast, and happen to live near one of Certini’s stores in Birmingham, Bristol, Saltash or Stafford, you can collect the same chains in-store for £15.99 (otherwise add £4.99 for postage).
Another widespread bricks and mortar retailer, Halfords, is a touch more expensive at £18.99, but they will likely price match any other retailer.

Bankrupt Bike Parts currently has the Shimano CN-M6100 chain listed at £10.99, plus £2.99 postage. However, note this chain doesn’t include a quicklink, so factor that in.
It’s the same story for Merlin Cycles for the same chain without quick link at £10.95 plus £3.95 for postage.
With a quick link, Sport and Leisure is ahead again at £14.99 with free postage.
If you’re in London, you can nab a chain for the same price from Condor. Free postage kicks in here at £30, otherwise it’s £1.95 for postage.
What about AliExpress?
We love cheap tech bought off AliExpress and similar sites, but we’d discourage most riders from purchasing Shimano chains from these marketplaces.
While there are undoubtedly legitimate sellers offering authentic products, chains are among the most commonly counterfeited cycling components, and the relatively small savings simply aren’t worth the risk compared to buying from a reputable UK retailer.
