Last week we covered road wheels, so this week it's time to look at some great bargains on mountain bike wheels – get them while they're hot and the weather too! From the reliable and high-performing to the lightweight and versatile, you'll be suprised at how far your cash will roll with these wallet-friendly options.

DT Swiss XM1501 Spline ONE wheelset — £830 £729

The XM 1501 wheelset is a benchmark-setting flagship performer from DT Swiss - Mick Kirkman / Immediate Media

It's hard to find DT wheels with a decent discount, especially when they're as good as this. While DT may not have the bling of other brands, it produces well-engineered, reliable and high-performance wheels.

Don't let the alloy rims put you off — this wheelset can shame many carbon hoops and comes with the proven performance of DT Swiss hubs to boot. This wheelset is available from Tweeks Cycles in a range of sizes and widths.

Spank Oozy Trail 345 wheelset — £549.99 £411.49

The Spank Oozy 345 wheels will roll over everything you point them at - Mick Kirkman / Immediate Media

If you want a mid-range wheel that will see you through almost everything, then you won't go far wrong with the Spank Oozy wheelset. While there is a slight compromise on weight, these wheels combine strength, durability and build quality for a wheelset that just keeps on going whatever you throw at it.

Spank Oozy Trail 295 wheelset — £550 £349.99

The Oozy 295 wheelset might provide a lighter option if you're not riding aggressively - Mick Kirkman / Immediate Media

If want to save some weight, you can pick up the Spank Oozy Trail 295 wheelset from Wiggle as well. This scored just as favourably with us as the 345 wheelset above, so might be the perfect choice for your everyday trail-riding needs.

SRAM Rise 60 wheelset — £1550 £700

If you need carbon and lightweight take a look at the SRAM Rise wheelset - Steve Behr

If it has to be carbon, then take a look at these SRAM Rise 60 wheels. While they're designed for cross-country, these lightweight carbon hoops are tough enough to be turned to trail riding. Even though they're on the pricey side, Chain Reaction currently has them for an absolute steal.

Shimano XT M8020 wheelset — £440 £352

Shimano's wheelsets always impress us - Shimano

Shimano's complete wheelset offerings are just as good for mountain bikes as road bikes, and I'm impressed by the look of these XT M8020 hoops. Shimano's trail wheelsets have a modern 24mm internal width and you can get yourself a dependable, easily serviced wheelset that should give you years of hassle-free use.

Evans is also selling the 27.5in sized version if you're rolling on smaller wheels.

Superstar Electro Alpine Trail wheelset — £449.99 £250

The Superstar Alpine wheelset is a killer deal at this price! - Mick Kirkman / Immediate Media

Superstar make some incredibly good products for the money and this wheelset is no exception. It's not the most sprightly wheelset but everything else including build quality, ride and durability is spot on. £450 was already a great price, but you can now pick these up at just £250!
