When two of my favourite brands joined forces for a one-off gravel collection, I was only too intrigued and a little excited to try it out.
The Strata Capsule comprises Quoc's GTXC Lace gravel shoes and Performance Gravel Sock, paired with Smith's Trace MIPS helmet and Defy sunglasses. Simply put, this collection is the gravel child of Quoc's reputation for premium cycling footwear and Smith’s expertise in protection and optics.
The Strata collection adopts a design that pays homage to dreamy gravel landscapes. Sandstone and fossil hues for the overall topography-style artwork, balanced with purple and blue tones for a pop of contrast. This isn’t a colourway that I usually go for, but it’s totally appropriate for gravel culture and looks appealingly cohesive in this four-piece capsule.
I've spent a considerable amount of time racking up miles using Quoc and Smith products, both on my gravel and mountain bike. So, I’m fairly familiar with both brands’ offerings, but new to the pieces in this line-up.
Quoc GTXC Lace shoes

Starting at the bottom, the GTXC Lace (£240) is Quoc's premium gravel shoe. Specifically for the Strata Capsule, the brand adds a new TPU-laminated tongue and supplies two sets of laces, while retaining the carbon-composite sole, recessed SPD compatibility and interchangeable arch inserts.

I’ve always preferred BOA dials on my shoes because they're quicker to adjust and easier to clean, so I was surprised at just how much I didn’t mind the laces. The TPU tongue is comfortable, and I like that Quoc includes three different arch inserts, so you can fine-tune the fit. The padded heel was also a much-welcomed bonus on longer rides.
QuocPerformance Gravel Sock

Completing Quoc’s contribution to the Strata capsule is the Performance Gravel Sock (£25). Made from a Coolmax fabric blend, the sock features targeted ventilation and a redesigned cuff to improve comfort and fit. Finished in the same Strata design, these socks are comfortable and a great match to the GTXC shoes.
Smith Trace MIPS helmet

The Smith Trace MIPS helmet (£240) sits at the top end of Smith's gravel range. It combines Koroyd impact protection with a MIPS liner, features 18 vents, Smith's AirEvac eyewear integration and a VaporFit retention system.
Compared to my current Smith Network and Forefront2 helmets, the Trace feels like a notable step up in quality and comfort. The Trace has been comfortable throughout several long rides already, providing excellent ventilation while feeling reassuringly substantial, considering how lightweight it feels.
Smith Defy sunglasses

The Smith Defy sunglasses (£165) feature Smith's ChromaPop lens technology housed in a lightweight rimless design with an interchangeable clear lens for lower-light conditions.
I’ve been most impressed by just how light these really are, and the ChromaPop lens delivers the excellent clarity and details I've come to expect from Smith sunnies.
For overall first impressions, I don’t have any real complaints and I'm looking forward to putting in the miles with this kit over the summer and beyond.
