Integration of the Bosch Smart System is central to the update of three key electric bike models in Focus Bikes' range: the Thron² full-suspension trail bike, the Jarifa² hardtail mountain bike, and the flat-bar Aventura² trekking bike.

All three model families use the same Bosch Performance CX Gen 4 drive unit and the 750Wh Bosch Powertube battery, which is both lockable and removable for charging. This gives increased battery range compared to the previous models, which used the 625Wh battery, and now offers the best range of any current Bosch system.

The frame platform for each model family has been redesigned to accommodate the new system, as well as strengthened to allow for an increased total system weight of 150kg.

Further improvements now also allow the use of thru-axle fitted bike trailers, making each of these models more versatile and family-friendly.

All new models also use Focus' C.I.S. integrated cable routing to keep the front end looking neat and tidy, with cables routed through the stem and headset into the frame.

The Thron² is a trail-ready 29er boasting 120 to 130mm travel.

The top-end Thron² 6.9 model is specced with a 130mm Fox 34 Float Rhythm fork and Fox Float DPS shock, while the 6.8 model pairs a SR Suntour Aion 35 EVO fork with a RockShox Deluxe Select shock.

With mounts included for a pannier rack and mudguards, this versatile machine could take you from the trail to your commute or even be loaded up with kit for an overnight adventure in the wilderness.

Choose the EQP model and you'll also get mudguards, a rear rack and lights fitted from the get-go.

Expect to pay £5,599 / €6,299 for the Thron² 6.9, £5,099 / €5,799 for the 6.8, and £5,099 / €5,799 for the 6.8 EQP.

2022 Focus Jarifa²

The Jarifa² hardtail uses a 100mm-travel fork and is specced with 2.2in Schwalbe Smart Sam tyres across the 6.9 and 6.8 models.

Topping out the range at £4,299 / €4,799, the Jarifa² 6.9 uses a Shimano Deore XT 12-speed drivetrain paired with an FSA 1x chainset and Shimano MT420 four-piston hydraulic disc brakes, with a set of 203/180mm rotors. This model has an SR Suntour Raidon 34 fork, whereas the £3,899 / €4,399 Jarifa² 6.8 uses the SR Suntour XCR 34 option.

Just as with the Thron², the Jarifa² also has mounts for mudguards, a rear rack, kickstand and lights, so you can choose to add those later if you wish.

2022 Focus Aventura²

A rear pannier rack, mudguards, lock mount, integrated lights and a kickstand come as standard with the Aventura² – a wide-tyred flar-bar utility bike. The bike fits quite aptly into Focus' 'E-Allround' category.

At the top of the range, the Aventura² 6.9 retails at £4,199 / €4,999 and uses a 12-speed Shimano Deore XT drivetrain with an FSA chainset and powerful Shimano MT501 four-piston hydraulic disc brakes.

At just a fraction less, the Aventura² 6.8 (£4,099 / €4,599) features a Shimano Deore M5100 and FSA drivetrain, and Shimano MT410 hydraulic disc brakes.

A different tact for size small

The updated models across these three electric mountain bikes will only be available in sizes medium, large and extra large for the coming year. For riders who need a size small, the preceding model will still be made available, with the former system design.

This means that for the size-small options, the same Bosch Performance CX drive unit is used, but paired instead to a 625Wh Bosch Powertube battery, with a reduced range compared to the updated models.

Bosch Smart System updates

The Bosch Smart System sees its eBike Flow cycling app integrated into the system. This allows you to easily configure your electric bike to your preferences and apply system updates to keep it functioning at its best.

The new Kiox 300 head unit gives a larger, clearer screen for displaying your ride data, which is completely buttonless and controlled via the Bosch LED handlebar remote.

Operated at the touch of your thumb, the remote allows you to change between electric support modes and also uses coloured LED lights to display modes and battery level.
