45NORTH just released a heavy-duty winter cycling boot called the Wölvhammer. The SPD boot uses six layers of synthetic materials, with an insulated inner boot surrounded by a weather-resistant outer.

45NORTH is based in Bloomington, Minnesota, where cyclists know what riding in real winter conditions mean.

“More people than ever are riding and commuting on bicycles all winter long, so we’ve been seeing growing demand for SPD-compatible footwear,” said David Gabrys, 45NORTH brand manager. “Our mission was to create the warmest and most comfortable cycling boot on the market.”

Gabrys said the idea for the Wölvhammer came from mountaineering. For example, the boot uses a Vibrum MTB-X sole, and the gaiter hook allows you to attach a knee-high gaiter for extreme protection against deep snow.

“We have been riding through Minnesota winters for many years, where the average winter temperature is 13° Fahrenheit,” Gabrys said. “We know what works in the cold and what doesn’t.”

One piece that the 45NORTH crew is proud of is the aerogel insoles, which they saw completely blocks out the cold coming from the SPD cleat. These Jaztronaut Insoles will also sell separately for $50.

The inner boot is insulated with 200g Thinsulate and lined with a combination of “monster fur” and synthetic fleece. The outer uses 1000-denier Cordura, a Sympatex waterproof breathable membrane, and an Action Leather mudguard.

“When you put your hand in the boot it feels like a Sorel boot,” Gabrys said.

The boot is tightened down with a cinch-lock closure, a sealed YKK zipper zips up the outer, and a Velcro strap wraps around the top.

The boot comes in full sizes only, 38–50 (no size 49), and retails for $325. A size 44 boot weighs 780g.

Although you can pre-order now through your local shop, the Wölvhammer won’t deliver until December 1.
