Adidas’s new Supernova Climachill jersey is kitted with three new technologies to help keep riders cool and comfortable during hot days in the saddle – aluminium cooling spheres, 'SubZero yarns' and 'Polar Fibres'.

Available from today in men and women’s cuts for a surprisingly reasonable £55 (US and Australian pricing and availability is currently unknown), the Adidas Climachill jersey is described by the three-stripe brand as “the next generation of active cooling wear for cyclists”.

Aluminium cooling spheres might not be spherical, but they are round and made from aluminium. Positioned over the upper back, this formation of tiny raised discs is designed to give a cooling sensation over one of the body’s biggest heat producing zones.

The aluminium cooling spheres are designed to help keep the upper back cool:

It’s not entirely clear how it achieves this, but we imagine the cooler metal helps displace heat from the warm body as well as keeping a slight gap between skin and the jersey material.

Adidas’s SubZero yarns are flat, which, according to Adidas, gives them a larger surface area than regular round thread. This enables better transfer heat away from the body, a process apparently aided by titanium contained within the yarn.

Finally, Polar Fibre is used to create a light, highly breathable fabric, working like an open mesh to maximise air permeability and improve ventilation and evaporation of sweat.

The jersey has three rear pockets – the central one with a zipped section – and a full-length zip down the front. There’s also a silicone gripper around the hem to help avoid the jersey riding up.

The Supernova Climachill jersey is available in purple, black, fiery orange and beige – all with understated graphics that give a classic look.
