Pirelli goes e-bike specific with new Cycle-e tyre range

Three model range for city riders with electric bikes

Pirelli has launched a range of e-bike specific tyres under the Cycle-e name following a reveal at Eurobike 2018. The three model range has been designed specifically to cater to the needs of city riders with electric bikes.

Pirelli returned to the cycling market with a full range of road tyres last year and recently released its tubeless ready Cinturato tyre.

Pirelli has had a clear focus on urban mobility, we have spotted an e-bike tyre from the company before, but at the time it was only available on bikes from Swiss brand Stromer. 

Three models will be available, two of which are available as a Standard or Sport version. The  Sport models feature a less pronounced tread pattern, slick centre tread and reduced weight for better rolling performance.

The tyres are constructed with two different compounds for the tread and carcass, to optimise grip and puncture protection.

In a nod to sustainability, Pirelli is also recycling old automotive tyres and using the reamining 'rubber crumb' as part of the material for this range.

Pirelli states that the Granturismo is inspired by its motorcycle tyres to offer performance for high-performance e-bikes. The tyre is available in 700c with 37-50c volume, 650b in 57c and 26inch in 54c. Weight ranges between 780g and 1,230g.

These models are designed to offer improved grip and traction in all conditions for better cornering and acceleration. They will be available in 700c wheel sizes with volumes between 32 and 50c volume available. They weigh between 690 and 1,180g.

The Crossterrain model is intended for rough ground and light off-road use, with a more pronounced tread pattern and raised side knobs for uneven ground. The tyres will be available in 700c with volumes ranging from 32-50c and weights between 690g and 1,180g.

It’s definitely interesting to see the move by yet another manufacturer to e-bike specific tyres. This makes a lot of sense to us, with the increased weight and torque inherent to a motorised machine resulting in increased loads and wear on standard tyres.

We don’t have any details on pricing yet, but the tyres will be available from October 2018.
