Pictures are being posted on the UK-wide cycle journey planner site, www.cyclestreets.net of vehicles parked in cycle lanes.
Everything from white vans, cars and taxis to beer deliveries get featured, along with contractors who close lanes without adequate warning signs or for apparently unnecessary lengths of time.
In a recent press statement, Cambridge Cycling Campaign said, following a cyclist being hit whilst passing a vehicle illegally stopped in a cycle lane,
“There are a number of places within the City where 50+ motor vehicles can be seen driving illegally in such cycle lanes each and every day. Illegal behaviour such as driving and parking in cycle lanes is a widespread problem, endangering cyclists.”
They also pointed out that only five tickets have been issued in the last three months to vehicles stopped in cycle lanes.
Highway Code Rule 140 says,” Cycle lanes. These are shown by road markings and signs. You MUST NOT drive or park in a cycle lane marked by a solid white line during its times of operation. Do not drive or park in a cycle lane marked by a broken white line unless it is unavoidable. You MUST NOT park in any cycle lane whilst waiting restrictions apply.”
Cyclestreets.net has a considerable stock of photographs on their site taken over a period of time and showing examples of good practice as well as problems. They cover not just cycle lanes but cycle parking, route signage and many other topics and by no means all the pictures are taken in Cambridge.
