The new Cannondale Treadwell urban bike range launched this week, featuring an in-built wheel sensor that connects to the brand’s own app, which can be used as a live dashboard. It even sends maintenance service reminders, and will be seen on more of its bikes from next year.

Developed with GPS giant Garmin, Cannondale's front-wheel mounted Speed Sensor links to the new Cannondale app and records rides as soon as the wheel starts turning, as well as acting as a live dashboard on the rider's smartphone mounted on the Intellimount stem.

The app provides information on speed, distance, calories burned, and even carbon emissions saved (we’re curious about how that works too). In our opinion, though, the most interesting feature is the app’s ability to track the bike’s maintenance needs. It sends reminders for when the next service is due, so even the least maintenance-savvy cyclist can keep their bike running smoothly.

Cannondale Treadwell range overview

The aluminium range is designed for everyday use, and suited to riders of all abilities, thanks to its Easy-Ride geometry, which essentially aims to make the bikes more suitable for riders of varying height, proportion and mobility — this translates to a low standover height (with step-through available) and a reasonably short reach so riders sit comfortably between an upright and forward-leaning position.

The Treadwell range features three models, each having two frame styles, so there are six options altogether. The first frame style has a low standover, and is generally the standard model in the range. This model is available in sizes small, medium and large.

The second is called the Remixte, and has a much lower step-through shape. It’s being marketed as the unisex option, but there’s no real difference in geometry, so realistically this range is more suited to riders with less mobility, or just those who prefer a step-through frame. This model is only available in sizes small and large.

All models in the range come with 650b wheels and 47c tyres. This not only makes them more suited to shorter riders in the smaller sizes, but dead trendy to boot.

At the entry level, the Cannondale Treadwell 2 and Treadwell 2 Remixte feature a 7-speed mixed drivetrain and mechanical disc brakes, while the Treadwell 3 and Treadwell 3 Remixte are 9-speed and come with hydraulic disc brakes. Finally, the Treadwell EQ and Treadwell EQ Remixte come equipped with alloy mudguards and a front rack.
