The Casco SPEEDster is a new addition to the upmarket German brand’s portfolio of cycling helmets.
Despite its billing as the company's entry level cycling helmet, the SPEEDster boasts some interesting features. Most notable, perhaps, is the option for a clip-on optical class 1 (meaning it’s very good) lens which can be worn either up, down, or taken off completely.
The track-inspired helmet is unashamedly aero: there are no flank vents and the rear end is truncated, which should translate into better aerodynamics when the head is not perfectly positioned. In fact, its shape is based on the higher level SPEEDairo, but has fewer wire-covered vents at the front.
The fit is adjustable, tight and comfortable. As well as a solid feeling ratchet dial – far more impressive than the system on the expensive Attack Limited Edition we saw last year – the SPEEDster has a four notch system to secure the helmet below the occipital bone at the back of the skull.
The Casco helmet’s a touch on the heavy side at a claimed 310g for a medium (54cm-58cm), but with its solid-feeling build quality and some interesting styling it also feels well-priced.
The SPEEDster is available in six colourways and two size covering heads from 54cm to 63cm. It's priced at £149.99 with visor, and £99.99 without visor.
