Following the launch of its new P5 TT and triathlon bike, Cervélo has now added a P3X to its PX-Series line-up.

The P3X is a triathlon bike designed to push every boundary while providing ample storage, adjustability and practicality. Cervélo says this is the “next generation” in its PX triathlon range, building on knowledge from its existing P5X.

Just like its limit-pushing forerunner, the P3X has been developed through huge amounts of research and testing using professional and amateur racers, studying their techniques in training and racing at different lengths and speeds.

This, combined with feedback and data from the P5X, has led to a bike that Cervélo claims is stiffer in key areas (8 percent stiffer at head tube and 15 percent at bottom bracket) for improved acceleration and climbing, yet also lighter by 16 percent (frame only) .

This has been achieved through a progression in lay-up techniques, shape and overall materials used. Cervélo says that on top of all these statistical improvements, one other key aim with this bike was to retain a fast, comfortable ride character.

P3X practical touches

According to Cervélo, one of the project goals for the new P3X was to revitalise its features “to reflect today’s standards.” The bike is packed with practical and well-designed products that help reduce overall weight further still.

The base bar and Speed Riser are a claimed 13 and 8 percent lighter than the brand’s previous offerings respectively, the latter featuring Cervélo’s latest single-tool adjustment that offers endless angle, height, width and reach options for the bar and pads.

There is also a removable bottle mount on the riser and tailorable grips on the base bar. On the down tube, StealthBox 300 storage offers out-the-way space for a repair kit.

At the front of the top tube, SmartPak 600 gives ample space to stuff your food for easy access while head-down hammering. A refined seatpost and built-in (removable) bottle mount are a claimed 22 percent lighter than before.

The frame now has increased tyre clearance by 3mm and will comfortably accept a 28mm (25c) tyre with ample clearance. Removable/replaceable front and rear derailleur hangers leave drivetrain options open and ensure longevity of the frame.

Incremental improvements all round then, and you’ll be pleased to hear Cervélo didn’t overlook the P3X’s price either. A performance machine like this will never come cheap, but the price tag is less harrowing than it could have been. See below for build options and pricing.

All of this sounds incredibly positive, but we’ll have to wait and see how the P3X performs in real world conditions.
