South East England isn't known for its mountainous terrain, so budding downhill racers often have to travel far afield to compete. That's set to change with the return of racing to the Bull Track, near Crowborough in East Sussex.
After a year off in 2009, local legend Alvar Coppard has organised a one-off race for 6 June. If he can cover the costs of the electronic timing system, etc, it could become a regular event.
Ben Wain, of local mountain bike website J.A.B. UK, said: "It's fairly grassroots. The focus is all about getting new riders to try racing and keeping the atmosphere friendly." As Alvar himself says, "the only pressure is in your tyres".
The course starts off in an open field, with flat turns and a few jumps (all of which can be rolled or ridden around), before entering a more technical wooded section with rocks, roots and berms. It'll be open the day before the race for practice, with a full day costing just £4.
