We first reported on the aerodynamic HJC Furion helmet more than a year ago, and have recently received one for testing. Since then, the company has expanded its range to include a more ventilated Ibex model and more affordable H.sonic.

HJC is a Korean manufacturer that has produced motorcycle helmets since 1971. With its established expertise in helmet development, it has now branched out into cycling.

In-house wind tunnels

Aerodynamics are arguably more critical on a motorbike helmet, with high speeds requiring a helmet that has clean airflow so as to reduce noise and improve comfort and safety.

That means HJC has access to its own wind-tunnel facility, which it has used to minimise drag while maximising ventilation in their helmets.

HJC claims class-leading ventilation for its Furion model. The 'Advanced Air Channel System' is designed for maximum internal airflow that is driven by the pressure differential of the airflow around the helmet — HJC dubs this 'Venturi Dynamics'.

Quality construction

HJC also uses various construction techniques to save weight and maintain safety. An 'Internal Reinforcement Structure' is moulded into the EPS foam to provide additional structural integrity.

In-mould construction bonds the EPS foam with the polycarbonate shell providing additional reinforcement. Polygiene treatment of the padding should help avoid smells building up over time.

The Furion is HJC’s aero-road helmet. The company claims up to 7% energy saving over competitors along with improved ventilation. The helmet weighs 190g.

The Furion retails for £149.99 / €199.

HJC Ibex

The Ibex uses an open design with 16 vents to make it more suited to hard efforts and warmer weather. It weighs in at 220g.

The Ibex retails for £179.99 / €249.

The H.sonic is HJC’s more affordable offering with even more vents. It weighs 210g.

The H.sonic retails for €149.

Availability

HJC helmets are being distributed globally. The company is also sponsoring the Lotto Soudal team so you’re likely to see more of them around and might even have spotted one on the Stage 4 Giro d'Italia winner.

HJC also has a TT helmet in the making, which we’ve seen on the pro-circuit but further details are vague at the moment.

Stay tuned for our impressions of the Furion model.
