Jasper Philipsen has undergone successful surgery on his collarbone and acromioclavicular joint after suffering fractures in the stage 3 crash that saw him abandon the 2025 Tour de France.

Leading the points classification and wearing the green jersey, Philipsen crashed before stage 3’s intermediate sprint, where he was taken down by Cofidis’ Bryan Coquard, who later apologised for the incident.

Philipsen hit the ground hard and slid along the road, with his withdrawal announced quickly after the incident.

In an Instagram post this morning, Alpecin-Deceuninck said: “Stage 3 of the Tour de France delivered us a tough day and a heartbreak moment, as Jasper Philipsen was forced to leave the race after a heavy crash during the intermediate sprint for the green jersey.

“In the meantime, he underwent a successful surgery last night at AZ Herentals to repair his collarbone and AC joint. Thank you to Dr. Steven and Dr. Tom Claes for their excellent care.”

Philipsen won his 10th Tour de France stage on stage one of this year’s race, taking the green and yellow jersey in the process.

Teammate Mathieu van der Poel won stage 2 and is now leading the general classification.

Stage 3 was crash-ridden, with several riders going down in the closing moments of the stage. Coquard, who was given a yellow card for irregular sprinting, also went down in the crash, alongside Davide Ballerini (XDS-Astana), Paul Penhoët (Groupama-FDJ), Arnaud De Lie (Lotto) and Emilien Jeannière (TotalEnergies).

Tadej Pogačar wrote on Instagram: “Super sad to see Jasper Philipsen hit the deck so hard – you will come back in no time.”

Tim Merlier won stage 3 onboard his European champion Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL8

Kaden Groves will now take on sprinting duties for Alpecin-Deceuninck.
