Lazer has launched the new Z1 KinetiCore, a lightweight helmet designed for hot weather.
The road bike helmet sits at the top of Lazer’s range, alongside the brand’s Vento KinetiCore aero lid.
Lazer claims the new Z1 weighs 220g in a size medium (CE). This puts it in line with the Kask Valegro (213g claimed weight in a size medium), while undercutting the Specialized S-Works Prevail 3 at 260g in an M.
The helmet is available in seven colours – White, Titanium, Cosmic Blue, Metallic Red, Harbour Grey, Flash Orange and Matte Black – and in three sizes, from small to large.
The helmet will retail for £229.99 / $249.99 / €249.99. Australian pricing is to be confirmed.
Goodbye MIPS, hello KinetiCore
The Z1 features Lazer’s KinetiCore safety technology, which the brand now uses instead of MIPS.
KinetiCore is said to protect wearers from both the linear and rotational forces of an impact, like MIPS
The technology takes inspiration from car crumple zones, with foam sections in the helmet breaking off upon impact.
Because the foam sections are integrated into the helmet’s core, Lazer claims an improvement in ventilation and a decrease in weight over other systems.
The helmet has received a 5-star rating in independent tests conducted by Viriginia Tech’s Helmet Lab.
Improved fit and visibility
The Z1 has Lazer’s Advanced RollSys closure system, controlled by a thumbwheel on the top of the helmet. The system spans around the entire circumference of the head and Lazer says it leaves enough room for a ponytail or bun.
The helmet features eyewear docking slots to enable compatibility with cycling glasses and it can accept Lazer’s Universal Lazer LED to keep you seen when riding in the dark.
Lazer says its Aeroshell is compatible with the helmet. The shell can be added to close the vents for extra aerodynamic advantage or provide protection against the weather elements, should you want to use the helmet in winter.
Better environmental credentials
Lazer says it has also considered the environmental impact of the helmet’s construction and manufacture.
Lightweight stitched straps made from antibacterial and recycled material are designed to ensure comfort.
Lazer has also removed the plastic strap divider found on the outgoing Z1 and is using a recycled material for the new divider.
