Fizik saddles made of alligator, stingray and ostrich have helped raise more than US$1,300/£856 for the World Bicycle Relief charity, which provides bikes to remote African communities. The 10 red saddles were created especially for the North American Handmade Bicycle Show and are being auctioned to highest bidders on eBay.

There are more than five days left in the auction, and at the time of publishing the most popular model is an alligator skin Arione R1, which has attracted a bid of US$355. The second most popular is the Kium-railed Tundra 2 MTB saddle, finished in cowhide with a ‘white paisley’ pattern and a current bid of just over US$200. Prices are likely to increase.

The World Bicycle Relief charity was established in 2005 in response to the Indian Ocean tsunami, and has since expanded its operations in Africa. It provides bikes on a study-to-own or work-to-own basis.
