Remember Fat Lad at the Back, the Yorkshire outfit that designs cycle clothing for mamils with a fuller figure?

Well, they're, er, expanding, and have organised a two-day sportive for riders keen to explore the Yorkshre roads, scenery and pubs that will host the Tour de France grand depart this July.

It called – wait for it – the Tour de Flab and will be held on 17 to 18 May. BikeRadar has been assured that the salubrious routes – 35 miles and 48 miles – will take in some of the county's top beauty spots, including Bolton Abbey, Burnsall and Grassington. It will criss-cross some of the Tour de France stage 1 and stage 2 routes.

The sportive has some heavyweight backing from Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, which led the campaign to bring to Tour de France to Yorkshire. “It’s great to see events encouraging even more people to saddle up and cycle in Yorkshire, which encourages people to get active and see our great county,” he said.

Fat Lad at the Back has also tapped up Dominic Irvine, who hopes to break the Land's End to John O'Groats tandem record, to be an after dinner speaker.

Taking part in the Tour de Flab – including a two night stay at the posh Wheatley Arms in Wharfedale with meals included – costs £187.50 per person based on two people sharing, or £295 based on single occupancy.
