Pirelli has today launched a new generation of its P Zero road tyre range, with two new clincher tyres that replace its highly rated P Zero Velo clincher tyre: the P Zero Race and P Zero Road.
Following the recent launch of the tubeless-ready P Zero Race TLR and P Zero Race TLR SL tyres, the P Zero Race uses Pirelli’s latest SmartEVO rubber compound, which has been tested by its sponsored WorldTour teams – AG2R Citroën, Trek-Segafredo and Team BikeExchange.
Pirelli says this compound combines three different polymers to ensure a “perfect balance of opposing characteristics, such as grip and rolling resistance”, though no specific figures for rolling resistance have been provided.
The P Zero Race tyre also uses a new 120 TPI (threads per inch) casing designed around an updated 19c rim – as per the latest ETRTO rim standards.
This means the tyre will measure stated size on a rim with an 19mm internal width, and correspondingly smaller or larger on a narrower or wider rim (because of how the internal width of a rim affects the actual size of a tyre when inflated – wider rims tend to increase inflated tyre size, and vice versa).

Pirelli P Zero Race clincher details and specifications
The Pirelli P Zero Race clincher is a road racing tyre designed to offer a combination of low rolling resistance, high grip in both wet and dry conditions, and a comfortable ride quality.
As previously mentioned, it uses Pirelli’s latest SmartEVO rubber compound and the updated 120 TPI casing. A lightweight puncture protection belt is also incorporated into the casing, sitting centrally beneath the tread.
Available in three sizes, from 700 x 26c to 700 x 30c, and with a variety of logo colours and a ‘classic’ tan sidewalls option, Pirelli says the tyre is designed for performance and endurance use.

Pirelli P Zero Road clincher details and specifications
The P Zero Road clincher is more of an all-round road tyre.
It uses Pirelli’s EVO compound, which promises to offer better durability than the SmartEVO compound, on a 120 TPI casing, and focuses more on durability and high mileage. Pirelli says the tyre nevertheless offers “excellent grip and low rolling resistance”, though, again, no specific figures have been provided.
Curiously, the P Zero Road clincher tyre is designed around a narrower 17c rim. This means the tyre will measure true to its stated size on a rim with a 17mm internal width.
The P Zero Road clincher tyre is available now in three sizes, from 700 x 24c to 700 x 28c. It has an RRP of £37.99 / €39.90 / $49.90.
