Primal Clothing overhauled its branding and range in 2015, and has now released a bright range of women's winter cycling kit to complement its summer kit and active wear ranges.

The range consists of thermal tights, base layers and jackets that can be worn as an outer layer or under a waterproof for added warmth. The range is versatile, with the cut and function of many of the items making them suited to both road and mountain bike wear. We take a look at a selection of new items from the women's winter range.

The following items are available in the UK. US availability is limited on certain items, and we are awaiting confirmation on Australian availability. We'll update this piece, with pricing, when we have more.

Women's Lumina 2nd Layer Jacket

The bright ombre shading on the sleeves of the lumina 2nd layer jacket from primal is certainly eye catching:

The Lumina jacket is designed to be a functional layer for use in winter conditions and transitional seasons. Raglan sleeves and a female-specific design combined with a relaxed cut provide plenty of scope for layering up with base- and mid-layers.

The jacket is made from 'Strata Fabric', a four-way stretch material with a soft, brushed lining, and comes in at a claimed 290g. Sleeves are long, with a rushed elastic cuff to keep them in place, and the jacket features a full-length front zip and three good sized rear cargo pockets.

Visually, we rather like the ombre effect on the sleeves, which fades from a vibrant pink to a bright purple and contrasts well with the otherwise plain black of the jacket (there's another little pop of colour for the Primal logo).

Women's Athene 2nd Layer Jacket

The athene 2nd layer jacket from primal:

The Athene Jacket is based around the same design and technology as the Lumina Jacket, with the main difference being the colours and patterns used. The Athene combines dark purple sleeves with a light blue body and an abstract purple pattern.

Like the Lumina, the Athene works well as an outer layer on cold dry days when combined with a base layer or two. It also features a tagless label system, which means no irritating internal tags with instructions printed on the fabric instead. Neither jacket is waterproof or windproof.

Primal Women's Onyx Covi tights

Women's thermal tights from primal:

The women's Onyx Covi tights are a winter thermal garment designed to help keep you warm on your ride. There are a few reflective elements to help increase your visibility on dark evenings.

The tights features a zip closure and silicone grip at the ankle to keep them in place when riding, and the polyester/spandex thermal fabric has four-way stretch and a soft brushed lining to keep the warmth in on winter rides. The ergonomic panelled construction sits comfortably and firmly against the skin.
