The new Rudy Project Astral ARC glasses feature new lens geometry, providing a fit designed for a wider range of face shapes and types of riding, with a weight of only 26g.
Lightweight frameless sunglasses are great for hot days, but in my experience have only ever been suitable for pure road riding – they tend to get unsettled when things become a little bumpy.
However, the new Astral ARC glasses have been designed to offer both light weight and a secure fit. Rudy Project claims the new lens shape, designed in conjunction with a stiff, yet flexible frame, will stay put whatever you ride and whatever your face shape.
New lens design
The key element of the new Astral ARCs is that all-new lens design. The new polycarbonate lens is mirror-finished and has a category 3 filter level. That means it allows between 8 and 18% of transmissible light through and provides UV400 protection, which should be ideal for riding in bright sun.
Rudy Project says the ARC lens design uses a new cylindrical shape that's engineered to provide distortion-free viewing for a wider range of face shapes.
The brand claims this lens shape, in conjunction with the stiff-hinged arms of the frameless Astrals and their flexible soft temple tips, makes for a secure fit that’s the equal of heavier full-framed cycling sunglasses.
The frame is made from Rilsan Clear, a bio-based polymer containing 45% material derived from castor oil. Rudy says the material is sourced through certified supply chains.
The Astral Arcs, at only 26g, are among Rudy’s lightest ever performance glasses. Surprisingly for such a light design, they're also compatible with an RX optical insert, so those in need of corrective prescription lenses can now opt for the Astral ARCs.
The new glasses have a temple length of 13 mm, 55mm height and 147mm width. They are available in seven colours and two limited-edition versions including the Vanilla Matte colourway pictured here.
Prices range from €129.90 / $209 to €149.90 / $241 depending on lens specification.
