The complete Shimano STEPS groupset
Dubbed STEPS (Shimano Total Electric Power System), the groupset has been engineered for e-bikes, a booming market in Europe, where sales are expected to grow by 13 percent in Germany alone this year.
Shimano say the 3.1kg groupset will have an integrated drive unit, battery, front gear mechanism, cycle computer and chain and will be able to propel bikes up to 25km/h before cutting out. The battery is expected to have a maximum range of 120km in eco mode.
The STEPS specifications suggest it could be a credible rival to Bosch's Classic+ e-bike system.
STEPS will be trialled on pilot bikes in early 2014 in Germany and will be available to e-bike manufacturers in August. Prices are still to be announced.
