The Mayor of London's Sky Ride will take place this year on Sunday 5 September in the Capital. It's the UK's biggest cycling event, attracting over 65,000 participants last year, and looks to build on that this year as cycling in the UK becomes more popular.
The 9 mile/15km route is completely closed to traffic between 9:30am and 4:30pm. It starts at the Tower of London, then heads along the Embankment to Parliament Square, passing Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament before reaching Buckingham Palace. The return leg is via the City of London and St Paul’s Cathedral.
The Mayor of London Boris Johnson, quadruple Olympic champion Chris Hoy, members of Team Sky and actress Kelly Brook will all take part in the event, which is by far the largest of all the Sky Rides that have taken place across Britain this year.
"London is in the midst of a two wheeled revolution and Sky Ride promises to add to our aim of making the capital the epicentre of pedal power," said Boris Johnson in a statement. "Being able to cycle on traffic free streets past some of the world’s most iconic sights is sheer bliss for anyone with a love of our great city or the bicycle. It is surely the greatest cycle celebration in the country and I urge everyone, whatever your age or ability, to come down on Sunday and take part."
