SRAM have confirmed the release and provided further details of their all-new single-ring 11-speed groupset – SRAM XX1. We’ve already had an in-depth look at the prototype groupset during our recent visit to SRAM’s European headquarters, but today SRAM confirmed that XX1 will be available from October 2012.
SRAM claims the XX1 group will be a ‘simpler, lighter and more durable’ choice.
The XX1 crank uses carbon arms and an aluminium spider to achieve a total claimed weight of around 650g. Six chainrings will be available ranging from 28-38 tooth sizes (28-30-32-34-36-38) whilst use of a universal spider means that rings can be swapped without any need to remove the crank arms.
XX1’s cassette comes in at a claimed 260g despite a massive 10-42t range. This means that XX1 is set to offer the lowest low gear and highest high gear of any single-ring setup currently available. The XX1 cassette will require a specific freehub body that will only be available as options on both SRAM and DT Swiss wheelsets, at least initially.
Shifters will be both trigger and grip shift varieties and both will use a carbon construction and a full Gore Ride-On cable system. The grip shifters will also use a JAWS lock-on system.
Finally XX1 gets a dedicated 11-speed chain that uses a slightly narrower external width than SRAM’s existing 10 speed chains.
