A teenager has appeared in court in connection with the death of Major Gareth Rhys-Evans, who was fatally injured while taking part in a time trial on the A1 in May.
Katie Hart, 19, of St Neots, Cambridgeshire, answered summons to appear at Huntingdon Law Courts today to face a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
Maj Rhys-Evans, 37, died following a collision with a car near Eaton Ford, Cambridgeshire during the Icknield Road Club 25-mile event on May 3.
The trial, which had 120 competitors, was immediately abandoned and Maj Rhys-Evans, who was riding for the Army Cycling Union, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The married father-of-two, originally of Llandovery, Dyfed, Wales, was based at Rheindahlen military base in Germany and had flown back to the UK to compete.
Maj Rhys-Evans commanded 12 Military Intelligence Company, part of 1 Military Intelligence Battalion. He joined the Army aged 25 in 1996, and served with the Royal Artillery before transferring to intelligence.
Hart was ordered to appear at Peterborough Crown Court on August 27 for a preliminary hearing. Magistrates granted her unconditional bail.
