The Bontrager Shut Up Legs XXX shoes are part of Bontrager’s range of clothing celebrating the career of uber-domestique Jens Voigt. As a pro he was one of the most popular in the peloton, finishing his career by setting a new standard for the hour record — 51.110km (it’s since been beaten, but he remains seventh on the all-time list, and at 43 the oldest to ever hold the record).
The shoe’s chrome finish requires confidence to wear, but the reflective nature will get you seen. Under that glossy skin is a very good shoe, with a robustly built upper.
Underneath, Bontrager has stuck with the Platinum level carbon sole (stiffness rated 14 out of 14 on Bontrager’s scale)
Width-wise these are very much the middle ground and were well suited to our tester’s feet. The boxy toe box features two decent sized mesh panels that regulate temperature, and the combination of twin Boa IP1 dials and a Velcro strap across the forefoot offers plenty of adjustment to get the fit just right.
Inside, a nicely sculpted inForm footbed holds your foot snug and the textured ‘cat’s tongue’ material wrapped around the inside of the heelcup adds further security.
Underneath, Bontrager has stuck with the Platinum level carbon sole (stiffness rated 14 out of 14 on Bontrager’s scale). It’s a rigid platform with a stepped-down cleat plate flowing into three mid-foot bars.
At 556g (pair, size 45) these aren’t the lightest at this money, but the plush feel, supportive fit and stiff sole make them one of our favourites for long rides. We’d switch to something airier in higher temperatures where breathability is more important than all-out stiffness and support.
