If it had an adjustable visor for the same price it would get 4.5 stars

Take the best trail helmets from Giro, Specialized and Fox and blend their best attributes and, more or less, you have the in-mould shell Firebird.

It’s a neutral fit so shouldn’t pose issues for most head shapes. Helping this is the Alpina Swing Fit system; a rear tension dial that also has avertical adjustment. Straps are wide and easily adjusted and the closure is an effective ratchet, rather than the usual clip buckle-style.

The Firebird dances the line between low profile cross-country and burly, deep coverage trail helmet and works well in both areas without looking odd. 19 big vents draw air in fast enough to minimise sweaty head syndrome.

We don’t mind the shape of the removable visor, just the fact it wasn’t adjustable. We wore the ladies version (low profile flower pattern that we totally missed) without realising.
