Casco are firmly established in the business of keeping heads protected and sport a long list of athletes who use their lids, including track cyclists, skiers and horse riders.
The Ares is their attempt to create the ultimate mountain bike helmet and incorporate a multitude of new design and safety features in the process.
Casco use the ‘Monocoque Immold Plus’ process to construct this carbon and lightweight EPS (expanded polystyrene) lid that, along with the integrated aluminium roll bar, helps dissipate impact forces in a bid to reduce head injuries.
The sleek-looking Ares is well ventilated and does a good job of keeping your bonce sweat-free. Ftting is taken care of by the Disc Fit system and is easily adjusted to fit securely.
Once in place, the helmet is reasonably comfortable but rather than spreading the load, the Disc system produces a noticeable pull around the front of your head, which begins to niggle after a while.
Weight-wise, this high-end lid comes in at around the 275g mark, which may seem a little weighty for the price, but in practice you don’t really notice it thanks to good air flow. The Ares is approved to CE EN1078 standards.
