The Scott Komati is a lightweight (253g for a large) 'down'-style smock. No geese were harmed in the making of the insulation though, because it's PrimaLoft Eco, which is made of recycled material.
That also means it's machine washable, which is a bonus. The outer of the jacket is durable rip-stop Pertex.
The Komati's shell is treated with a water-repellent coating that does a good job of keeping showers at bay. Like most down jackets though, it will get soggy if the heavens really open. The advantage of PrimaLoft over actual down is that the insulation remains effective even when it's wet.
Although not necessarily designed for riding in, we've frequently turned to the Komati for chilly, dry commutes. It does a decent job of protecting you from the wind and the insulation works well. It isn't a jacket for long hard rides - you'll overheat quickly! You can easily pull it on and off over a lid though, which is handy.
The Komati is a fairly 'outdoorsy'-looking – although less garish colours are available – and is perfect for pulling on over kit before a winter event.
We'd happily use it for a bit of walking too and, as it packs neatly into its own chest pocket, it makes a ton of sense for touring cyclists who want something warm to wear when sitting around the camping stove.
