Controlled and remarkably cheap Alpine-proof all-rounder

Formula's Oro range is a true 'one brake does it all ' design, stretching from the ultralight Puro to the monster rotor Minnaar brake, with the excellent, high value Oro K24 placed somewhere in the middle.

Formula brakes have always had a soft feel but the broad blade squeezes on the power with immaculate modulation. The bite point can also be adjusted independently, with a knob behind the main lever blade. Once bedded in, bite power for lever pressure is very impressive too, with the 180mm rotor standing the bike on its end with ease.

This means it heats up quickly but evenly. Right through the dyno run the response was consistent, until we eventually vaporised the hose and fluid on the final run. You won't ever hit the test conditions of 500-plus degrees in real use, though - or, at least you shouldn't!

A post-mounted calliper and two-piece calliper clamp simplifies fitting, although it needs a bit of juggling to fit snug against some shifter pods - a combined SRA M shifter/lever clamp is available, though. K24's plain finish makes it excellent value for overall performance and it's one of the lightest too.
