Super light, super pimpy retro cranks, but seriously spendy

These cranks from German über machinists Tune are a cosmetic kickback to the glory days of Grafton and Cook Bros over a decade ago. They're still damn light, though. By machining the cranks parallel to the manufacturing 'grain' of the alloy, Tune can keep these skinny scalloped arms durable as well as retro gorgeous.

They also run on a unique six-sided titanium axled bottom bracket to increase their stiffness, although the BB adds another £165 to the already high price. The five arm spider is also press fitted and bolted into place rather than being one-piece forged like most modern chainsets, but long term reports suggest it lasts fine. Again, you're paying around another £88 for just the matching inner and middle rings, too. They are ultra durable titanium and their feathery weight makes a complete Tune setup significantly lighter (approx 150g by our reckoning) than most other setups.

Ultra fastidious machining tolerances all round also make fitting a reverent joy, and the polished, hard anodised finish is impressively durable, so your investment stays pretty long term. 170, 175 and 180mm crank lengths mean most riders can get the right leverage but Zyro don't bring in all the multiple colour options from Germany. At £500 for the full setup, you aren't going to see many around anyway though, although there is a 'BigFoot' version that fits old square taper BBs if you've still got an old Royce or similar hanging around.
