Superb grip and build quality, but for £50 less we’d opt for steel axles, not titanium

The fourth iteration of Burgtec’s popular flat pedal introduces a slimmer 16mm profile, a new concave shape and revised axle design, while retaining the massive platform of previous Penthouse flats.

Titanium axles help bring weight down to 380g and they spin on a sealed bearing and double bushing combo that’s remained tight and precise through a winter of soggy trails. Grip is just as good as on the MK3 pedals, with the concave design – the platform is 1mm lower in the centre than at the edges – delivering a more consistent feel.

The revised axle has brought the pedal body closer to the cranks, which can lead to contact when you’re struggling to find the sweet spot after hanging a foot off. That said, the new shape and shorter axle should help overall strength. We’ve taken some hefty slams on ours and they’re still spinning straight and smooth.

Overall, the MK4s retain all that was good about the MK3s. Some riders may find the large pins a touch too aggressive though, and with a weight saving of just 60g over the steel axle option, that extra £50 for the Ti pedals seems like a lot of money for not a lot more pedal.
